On Thursday morning Penny was woken up by a loud thump as the book she'd been reading the night before fell to the floor. She must have fallen asleep mid chapter. It was a sound that greeted her quite often. She leaned over the side of her bed, a sliver of sun streaming in over the bedroom floor from a crack in the curtains, and scooped up her fallen book, giving a sleepy Fischer a kiss on his nose before retreating back under the duvet to find her place. She read a few pages before it was finally time to get up.
Thursday was always a good day, as the library didn't have to go far. It meant she could grab a few more minutes in bed. It was the last day of the working week and she always felt a little lighter, more relaxed. She looked forward to catching up and sharing news with her colleagues at the main library in town and seeing what new books had come in that she could recommend to her customers.
In many ways it was the hardest day of the week, but every day had its own challenges and rewards. Thursday however was special, even Fischer was more enthusiastic on a Thursday. Although that was probably due to the treats he knew her colleagues would have waiting for him. Everybody loved Fischer.
"Come on, Fish Face, that's enough slouching around we need to get a move on."
It was only a short drive from her front door to her library pitch on the village green. It was another beautiful blue sky day with the odd cloud floating lazily over the sun. Penny set up her table and chair, part of a camping set she'd owned for years, and made a cup of tea for herself and poured a bowl of water for Fischer, giving him his morning treat while she waited for her first patrons. No doubt he'd get several more as the day wore on.
She was right. Before long a familiar customer arrived to return her book and select a new one, hand reaching into her cardigan pocket for a dog biscuit. Fischer sat and gave his paw to shake, then barked a thank you after he'd finished it.
It seemed every customer who came by had a treat for the little dog. He was a source of entertainment and happiness for many of the elderly who came to library. Few of the older generation travelled far now and visiting the library was a big social event for them. Penny was happy to be of service.
Just as she checked out a stack of books for one of her regulars, her mobile rang. Before she even glanced at the screen, some sixth sense told her it would be Susie.
"Hi, Susie. If it's another lift you need, you'll have to hang on for a little while. I haven't had all my regulars turn up yet and can't leave until I've seen them. Can you wait? I'm nearly finished." Penny said.
